Team Bio

The West Philly Hybrid X Team (EVX Team) includes students from an after school program of the Academy of Automotive and Mechanical Engineering, a program of Philadelphia Academies, Inc. We are based in West Philadelphia High School, a public high school serving one of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in the city of Philadelphia.

For the last twelve years, under the guidance of Team Director Simon Hauger, the EVX Team has built and raced alternative fuel vehicles, achieving remarkable success. As entrants in the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's Tour de Sol, we outperformed university teams and production vehicles, winning the competition in 2002, 2005 and 2006.

The students are assisted and mentored by a group of teachers and other adults who bring engineering expertise, business acumen and professional networks to the work of building cars and creating opportunities and options for Team members. Key support has come from Drexel University, and the many professionals affiliated with Philadelphia Academies, Inc.

The Team has worked in the alternative fuel vehicle arena for over a decade. The PIAXP was the next big challenge for the Team. The challenge was huge; greater than we could have imagined. The PIAXP has driven us to examine an entirely new set of issues. While we had a long history of success in building efficient cars, we have now jumped into the world of green jobs, sustainable manufacturing, car sharing and environmental activism with both feet. To say that we got splashed when jumped would be an understatement. The objectives of the Team have expanded exponentially. We must build cars, be prepared to launch a viable business while we continue to support our student Team members as they grow from shy and gangly teenagers into skilled automotive technicians, college students, activists and entrepreneurs.

Student Team members work side by side with teachers to assemble vehicle components -- and the vehicles themselves in our school shop. They polish their public speaking and writing skills in the classroom and after school with Toastmasters International. They meet with business and industry leaders to learn about manufacturing and green jobs. Then, they put the knowledge and skills they have acquired to use as they leverage the Team's resources in meetings with political, community and business leaders as they push our work forward and raise awareness about the critical issues they are addressing.

The adults bring an extraordinary level of knowledge and expertise to the work of the Team. Our most senior technical advisors have decades of automotive experience. Drexel University students and their advisors add cutting edge technology to the project. Our professional supports from Philadelphia Academies, Inc. and their business partners round out our Team.

The Team was started as an after-school program to engage students around math and science. We have built and competed with alternative fuel vehicles since 1998.

The Labor Day Parade

September 6, 2010

The West Philly Hybrid X Team spent the day at Philadelphia’s Labor Day Parade. It was an absolutely perfect day. Sunny skies, no humidity, lots of people and both the cars looked and ran great. On the last day of summer vacation, teachers and students made it to the Auto Academy to get the cars ready for the parade. Cars were buffed, windshields shined and we pulled onto Hanson Street when we realized we’d forgotten to add fuel to our electric hybrids. We have great range on both cars but just in case… We filled up the GT got with 100% ... more »

We need YOUR help!

August 19, 2010

The West Philly Hybrid X Team has taken on a new Challenge and we need YOUR help today! What’s the challenge? It’s GE’s $200 million Ecomagination Challenge, an innovation experiment where businesses, entrepreneurs, innovators and students share their best ideas on how to build the next-generation power grid. We know that’s a mouthful, but voting for the EVX Team’s entries in the Challenge is easy. Click to read the story, then click on the ideas.  We appreciate it. Entrants in the Ecomagination Challenge can present ideas in thr... more »

Final Presentations

August 16, 2010

Whenever you are asked to present your ideas in front of an audience, it is a pretty great thing. Last Thursday, the students of the West Philly Hybrid X Team Summer Program 2010 presented their work and findings on two very distinct but valuable projects: enhancing the fuel efficiency of the EVX Focus and designing an “ideal” school. Their presentations were wonderful. Over the course of six weeks, students and adult team members worked towards common goals set by the group. Starting the summer program, nine students signed up and arri... more »

Aptera and Me

August 5, 2010

On August 3, the X PRIZE posted a blog at the request of Aptera regarding the MPGe this California based team had obtained. Apparently there was a dispute about whether they had obtained 164.3 MPGe or 178.2 MPGE. The discrepancy had to do with communications between the Aptera charger and the battery pack. The blog sounded astoundingly similar to an experience we had. Now, it is really important to understand that there is virtually nothing similar between Aptera and the West Philly Hybrid X Team. Their car came in a humongous, beautiful... more »

Temple University Hybrid

August 3, 2010

The West Philly Hybrid X Team is in the shop 4 days a week. One group of students is working on designing an ideal school while the other group is working to improve the fuel efficiency of our competition vehicles. Without the rigid school year schedule we’re able to go on field trips, too. The school group visited two different schools and visited two green roofs. The fuel efficiency group went to Temple University to see an Audi a group of engineering students converted to an electric hydrogen fuel cell hybrid. It was fascinating. The Temp... more »

Wait til next year

August 1, 2010

I was born a Phillies fan in 1952. I lived through the heartbreaking pennant race of 1964, but I knew we could wait until next year. Sixteen years later, in 1980, the Phillies finally won the World Series. It was their first World Series victory in the 97 years since the team’s founding. Folks in Chicago have been waiting for 102 next years for the Cubs to win the Series.   As a matter of fact, with exception of New York Yankees fans, most baseball enthusiasts have lived through countless sad Octobers. But every April, we are again fill... more »
