Team Bio

Team OptaMotive is passionate about bringing about change in the automotive industry. Decades of stagnation in vehicle design and approach to fuel efficiency has made the consumer a prisoner of the fossil fuel economy. These many years of focus on carbon guzzling chariots is about to be taken over by the entrepreneurial forces which brought about the silicon era with its high technology culture. The time is ripe for a new way of thinking and a clean way of commuting.

Team OptaMotive, based in Ottawa Canada and San Jose California, will be the company to bring a pure battery electric vehicle competing in the Alternative Class to the apex of engineering design excellence and consumer attraction.

The team is led by Mark Demers who describes himself as a Visionary and Optimist; several team members can attest to that description. Mark has excelled in his sales and marketing career and has equally made a name for himself or more correctly for CM Robotics with their “Battlebot” Ziggy who has been a regular champion in the super heavyweight class of combat robot competitions.

Team OptaMotive is bolstered by members who have experience in robotics, autonomous control, vehicle design, race engineering, control systems and battery engineering. Together with a passion for engineering and a perfectionist attitude, team OptaMotive is well aligned with the spirit of the X PRIZE competition.

September 5, 2010

We really think Leah is learning to communicate, both verbally and with sign. In about July I remember thinking her first word will be "cat" as she would always light up when she saw Lucha and then look at me. When she did, I would sign and say, "cat." Soon thereafter she'd whisper "c..t..." of course I took this as coincidence but wondered deep down if this was deliberate. When we went away to Ontario, she never used those consonants again.Mid-July she started waving. Again, I took this as coincidence - that she was reaching out to the pers... more »

San Jose, CA: Hotbed for Electric Vehicles

June 11, 2010

San Jose has a number of exciting electric vehicle events coming our way the next half of this year.  First, Analysts IDTechEx will host the Future of Electric Vehicles conference and exhibition this December in San Jose, CA.  The conference will focus on all types of vehicles - from cars, buses and trucks to military vehicles - and the associated technologies.  In addition, Smart will be leasing some electric cars in San Jose and a handful of other US cities before they market the cars to the public in 2012.  San Jose is definitely the ... more »

Streamlining

June 7, 2010

We've been working hard at making our car more streamlined.  We decided to improve the tail section and making door hinge improvements.  We're also working on "ruggedizing" our battery box.  As usual, our team is working late nights and weekends to make our vehicle more optimized so we're ready for Knockout at the end of June. US Push for Efficient Vehicles

May 21, 2010

We love the fact that in Obama's plan to improve automobile fuel efficiency, he today announced that he is including electric vehicles.  It's about time electric vehicles are being considered as a legitimate form of transportation!  The overall federal goal is to increase automobile efficiency to 35.5 mpg by 2016.  With electric vehicles back in the market and competitions such as the PIAXP spurring innovation, we think this goal is worthy and not only can, but should be attained by the mass market. Conception to Birth

May 17, 2010

Silicon Valley is well known for inventing revolutionary technology in a home garage.  Well, OptaMotive is no exception.  After the idea was conceived, all work was done in the garage or our founders either in the Ottawa or San Jose area.  This is a picture of the garage in Campbell, CA, where E-Rex has gestated and developed since fall, 2009.
