Team Bio

Comprised of over 55 undergraduate and graduate students from nearly all of the academic colleges across the university, the Cornell 100+ MPG Team is well on its way toward designing and building a hybrid diesel-electric race car. Guided by world-class faculty and utilizing university facilities, the multi-disciplinary student team employs a top down, systems engineering approach to vehicle design. This approach will enable the team to effectively build a consumer focused, efficiency driven, and practical vehicle for the upcoming Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE Competition.

The team makes use of a ‘parallel’ design strategy where electrical, mechanical, and structural components are built and tested in a prototype car while the final vehicle is designed simultaneously – culminating in the transfer of the technology to the final vehicle. State of the art simulation technology has allowed the team to compare a large number of electric motors, ultra-efficient internal combustion engines, and variations of hybrid drive train layouts to ultimately produce a comprehensive vehicle design.

With an enthusiastic and talented student body, the Cornell 100+ MPG Team strives to learn and apply knowledge about automobile design while recognizing and addressing the efficiency and lack of environmental incentives that afflict today’s consumer market. Our goals are to:

  • Win the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE Competition
  • Increase the public’s awareness of ultra-efficient automotive technology
  • To educate students, the next generation of automotive engineers, to be energy conscience in their personal and work lives

Development of the Redshift

April 26, 2010

Before we got to the fun of cutting and welding, the team worked out several different drafts of what the car might look like. In the Spring semester of 2008, this was our final model: The Redshift has the chassis of a Subaru Sambar, which is a type of microvan, and the body of a [...]... more »

From the Cradle

March 31, 2010

Before we began working on the Redshift, the team began with a modified 92 Geo Metro as our test mule. Mule cars, also known as development mules or test mules, are usually older model vehicles that are equipped with new components for testing. The Geo Metro prior to any alterations: The thin red lines in the [...]... more »
