Alternative Fuel Sciences (AFS) is a start-up of family and friends who all share the great desire to address some of the most pressing issues mankind will be facing in the 21st century. The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE address one of the main issues which is, how do we establish a sustainable transportation energy infrastructure that is economically viable and environmentally friendly? Members of AFS have varied back grounds and expertise in energy, environmental solutions, automotive, racing, chemical-mechanical engineering and business as far back as the 1960's. Many patents and patent pending are held by AFS members whose vision and insight have brought AFS to the point of entering the Progressive Automotive X PRIZE with ZeroFuel and on board decomposition technology. ZeroFuel is a safe carrier of ammonia and hydrogen in a water-carbamide (aka urea) solution. Carbamide is produced as solid pellets from hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide at over 130 million tons a year. The carbamide infrastructure is already in place world wide as consumers can purchase carbamide fertilizer (46-0-0) at any mass market retailer.

The expansion into transportation fuel will be economic to scale as the safety and cost aspects of ZeroFuel will make it much easier to establish filling stations (over fossil fuels) for the commercial and private sectors. This expansion has already taken place as the EPA has mandated new diesel trucks have a urea system on board to help reduce emissions by 2010. The possibilities of ZeroFuel being a renewable fuel enables the United States to produce all the fuel domestically, there by dramatically reducing fossil fuel imports and US dollars going over seas.

ZeroFuel is the safest of all fuels as it is non toxic, non flammable or explosive and carries the DOT's safest rating of 0-0-0-0. ZeroFuel is a zero emissions fuel, including net zero greenhouse gas emissions when renewable produced hydrogen from the V-process is used. Being that ZeroFuel is based on a fertilizer it supports a sustainable food production future unlike many of the other alternative fuels that disrupt food supply.

ZeroFuel in the ammonia state has an octane rating of over 130 and has been tested in labs with internal combustion engines (ICE) achieving compression ratios of 35:1 without having any detonation issues. With ZeroFuel's unique attributes AFS can expand our technology into truck, train, marine, farm, mining, motorsports and stationary applications, as ZeroFuel is also a proxy for LNG.

AFS will demonstrate during the Progressive Automotive X PRIZE the viability of ZeroFuel as a safe carrier of ammonia and hydrogen. ZeroFuel 1 & 2 (ZF1 & ZF2) will be highly modified production based vehicles with high compression ICE's using the ZeroFuel ammonia and hydrogen on demand fuel system. ZeroFuel 3 (ZF3 aka Genesis) is the only privately owned hydrogen fuel cell vehicle in the world that also holds a world record of over 400 miles on one tank of hydrogen. ZF3 will be retrofit with the ZeroFuel hydrogen on demand fuel system that will increase the safety and range aspects of the vehicle dramatically.

AFS strongly believes that with the advent of ZeroFuel as a safe carrier of ammonia and hydrogen (on demand fuel systems) that the transportation industry will shift research from battery technology to building super efficient ICE's, ammonia and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, as safety, storage, range, emissions, and cost per mile will be far superior to any other transportation fuel.
